Tyler Samaniego: A Rising Talent for the Altoona Curve
The Pittsburgh Pirates recently expanded their 40-man roster, adding six prospects, including left-handed relief pitcher Tyler Samaniego. Drafted in the 15th round in 2021 from the University of South Alabama, Samaniego began his professional journey with the Low-A Bradenton Marauders, where he showcased his potential by striking out 15 batters in just seven innings.
After a brief stint at High-A Greensboro, he quickly advanced to Double-A Altoona, where he initially performed well. However, his progress was hindered by injuries and inconsistent performances. In 2022, he recorded a 3.52 ERA over 24 appearances but struggled with strikeouts compared to earlier seasons. The following year saw him face challenges again, culminating in a season-ending elbow injury.
Despite these setbacks, Samaniego rebounded in 2024 with a strong showing in Altoona, achieving a 3.08 ERA and striking out 30 batters in 26.1 innings. With significant experience at Double-A, he is poised to start the next season with Triple-A Indianapolis and could potentially join the Pirates' active roster as a valuable left-handed option.
